ROLF HARRIS – INTUITION (LIMITED EDITION BRONZE SCULPTURE)

In the Rodin programme for the ‘Rolf on Art’ series for BBC TV. I was asked to create a sculpture of a pair of hands as Rodin had done, first modelling the hands in clay and then casting them. To my amazement, I was told that Rodin used exactly the same single hand sculpture, but placed it in two different positions in the finished work. I got my dear daughter Bindi to pose for the work, and modelled it from her hand.

This is the hugely satisfying end result, and if you look closely it is definitely NOT a pair of hands. It is a repeat casting of the same hand, but placed in a slightly different position at a different angle. It was most thrilling to know that it was possible to do something as complicated, and I’d like to thank the people at the casting foundry who nursed me through the whole process.

Ben Payne has built a reputation for creating artwork which is fresh, escapist and above all, uplifting. Born in Surrey in 1975, he began drawing portraits and painting as a hobby; by the age of 16 he was selling his work, and he has now developed into a major British talent. Although he is almost completely self-taught Ben is able to respond to challenges and create artwork that is both technically accomplished and highly accessible.

Ben’s degree from Southampton University is a world apart from his artistic life, yet the influence of his academic and professional background can be observed in his art. After graduating in Psychology he became an independent therapist and pursued a career in the field of Autism, working with young children, helping them to overcome their difficulties in communicating with the outside world. Whilst pursuing this career he continued painting in his spare time, teaching himself and extending his range into oils.

Ben’s high-impact land, sky and seascapes are inspired by the landscapes and coastlines around the world. He owes an artistic debt to a range of artists, in particular Turner and Whistler. Their influence can be seen in the way he captures the appearance of clouds with such delicacy, while employing a vivid and dramatic palette – a characteristic which lends his work an ethereal quality.

Ben believes that working with children has taught him to value simplicity and to communicate in a very direct and accessible language. His powerful paintings do display a certain innocence which somehow sets them part from the work of his contemporaries. While his subjects are realistic they often have dreamlike overtones, rendering them an intriguing combination of enchantment and sophistication.

This was painted from a television show commemorating the fact that Elvis would have been 75 in 2010 had he lived. I feel this picture really captures his huge appeal to the youngsters of the day and I love the two girls at the right of the picture, watching his every move with rapt attention. They are absolutely loving everything he does, loving the way he sounds and the way he performs.

Canvas Edition of 195 – Framed canvas Size: 20″ x 40″

Many years ago, when TVAM was operating, I arranged for them to hang a huge sheet of photographic paper in their studio so that I could do a demonstration painting of a snowscene for the TV cameras. I’d done all sorts of preliminary sketches of snow scenes, tree and building covered in snow, and went ahead and painted a 9 foot by 12 foot scene. It was thrilling to do, using all the different pots of paint and the 4 inch house painting brushes. I took a photo of the end result and have kept it ever since. The original painting was scrapped. Well, what can you do with something that huge in fairly flimsy paper? Just recently I unearthed my old photo and was inspired to paint it again, but this time in oil, and at a more sensible size.
